Computer Chip Timing: The 2008 Amica Insurance Breakers Marathon will use the computerized ChampionChip® timing system. Chip timing allows each runner’s time to start when he or she reaches the starting line. The participant’s finish time is calculated precisely upon crossing the finish line. Runners are provided with a chip in their race packet and must return it at the finish line. In case of withdrawal or cancellation, a $35.00 replacement fee will be assessed if the chip is not returned within 15 days after the race. Runners who already own a chip may use it by registering the chip at race packet pick-up/pre-race expo.
Race History: The Nifty Fifty Ultra Race Weekend began in 1992 and took place in Coventry, Rhode Island for the first 13 years. In 2004, the Breakers Marathon was added to the ultra-distance race weekend’s events after overwhelmingly strong interest from both the Rhode Island running community and national marathon enthusiasts. In 2005, the Breakers Marathon Weekend moved to Newport, Rhode Island, where it has quickly grown strong roots and ardent community support
Race Mission: The mission of the 2008 Amica Insurance Breakers Marathon race weekend is to bring a world-class marathon race event back to the great state of Rhode Island, and in the process raise money for the Providence Ronald McDonald House.
